Nowadays, we live in a consumerist society. People are too focused on wasting money in products they don’t need just because the pleasure of owning it. This may sound weird, but think about how many times have you seen something with its price lowered and you thought it was a great deal and then decided to buy it despite having seen it earlier with its original price and thinking that you didn’t need it. I’m sure that you have been in this situation more than once.
I’m sure you know what Black Friday is, but explaining it a bit, it’s the name given to the shopping day after Thanksgiving in the USA. Product’s prices are really low and shops open until very late so people can spend more time buying. This tradition has expanded throughout the world, and it has become a very popular phenomenon in the last years.
In my opinion, Black Friday should disappear, or at least, there should be some kind of regulation. When big stores make sales, it affects smaller commerces, making them losing more money. And since small commerces are in danger due to the fast growth of bigger franchises, Black Friday does nothing but damaging those ways of selling.
To sum up, I think that consumerism is affecting us in more ways than it should, and the worst part that we don’t even notice it because we’re too used to cohabitate with it. Traditions like Black Friday are damaging our society and are making us poorer, since they are making us spend more money in unnecessary things, and sadly, our economy isn’t the best to be affected by things like Black Friday.
